Instructor: Christina Katsolis

Want to show off your love for photography and provide unique gifts for your family and friends this Valentines Day? Then step away from those generic, store bought cards and come make your own personalized photo Valentines.

Choose from a variety of custom-built templates, add your portrait and a personal message, then slide into envelopes and address to that special someone. But that’s not all: add your favorite picture to a keepsake box and decorate with lace trim, glitter, studs, gems, etc. Use this custom box to store all the Valentines you receive or fill with treats and give as a gift.

*Please note: A picture-taking session is part of this workshop, though you are welcome to submit photographs of your own (from special occasions, parties, etc) to be included in your photo Valentines. Each participant may submit up to 5 separate images, no smaller than 4x6, 300 dpi. These images must be submitted a week in advance via email to katsolc@DaytonaState.edu

Tin “Types” (All skill levels)
Saturday, April 21, 2012 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm CANCELLED
Instructor: Christina Katsolis
Join us for a new take on an old photographic technique!

After a brief picture-taking session, children will be given special crafting metal and colored foil from which they will fashion their own tin “types.” They will start by cutting small rectangular frames (and other fun border shapes) in which to put their portrait. These soft metal borders act as decorative trim, cut easily with scissors and can be drawn on, embossed or stamped to create raised designs. Custom roller sets and texture tools will be available for the children to experiment with, and as a finishing touch, they can emboss their own name beneath their picture!

These tintypes portraits can be used for a variety of purposes—turn them into ornaments, refrigerator magnets, specialty notecards. etc.

Note: Traditionally, tintypes were made on pieces of thin sheet iron coated with a black enamel and a collodion emulsion which allowed the viewer to see a positive image. Many tintypes were pasted into paper cards whose window openings were often surrounded by a decorative embossed border. See tintype examples here
