Split Toning (All skill levels)
Saturday, March 31, 2012 • 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Instructor: Christina Katsolis

In this workshop, we’re going to look at several ways to digitally produce a “split toning” effect in your photographs. The split toning technique allows you to add one color to the highlight areas of your print, and another color to the shadow areas. The two colors you choose can be alike or completely dissimilar—it simply depends on whether you want to achieve subtle or dramatic results. Use cool tones for a subdued or moody effect, or experiment with slightly warmer colors to create a brighter, more vibrant effect. It’s entirely up to you, and of course, dependent upon your subject matter. This technique can be utilized to create retro or abstract results in your photography, or simply (and more traditionally) add a beautiful final touch to portraits.

Creating Dynamic Black and White Photographs (All skill levels)
Saturday, May 12, 2012 • 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Instructor: Christina Katsolis

Are your black and white images flat and lacking an impact? We’ll explore the range of black and white conversion techniques available in Adobe Photoshop, including the use of the Channel Mixer (create, save and load your own custom presets) and application of adjustment layers to create high-quality grayscale, sepia, or other tinted images. Learn to “see monochromatically,” visualizing your scene in terms of tonal values and contrast rather than color. Once your images have been converted to black and white, we’ll consider adding special effects—such as layers to lighten the image (for high key), darken the image (for low key), or split-toning techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own color photographs for conversion, though source files will be provided.
