Daytona Beach College and the University of Central Florida 2008 Photography Graduates

Photography has flourished on the “World’s Most Famous Beach.” From photographers, editors, studio owners and fashion photographers to webmasters and art directors, an impressive list of alumni from Daytona Beach College, and in recent years, the partner program at the University of Central Florida, have made their mark on the national scene. Ever since the Daytona Beach College Photography program has distributed literature to prospective students, there has been one page that seems to capture people’s attention more than any other: a simple map of the United States with an extensive list of photographers names spread across the outline. Photography programs based at community colleges generally do not figure quite as prominently as this nationally, but for nearly 40 years Daytona Beach College graduates have taken their place among the nation’s leading photographers. In the early years few programs in the country were able to offer the range and depth of instruction that provided the foundation for these careers. With the commitment of successive college administrations, the program grew into the largest, most comprehensive commercial photography program in the southeast. The challenges of a rapidly changing aesthetic and commercial environment have been met by a dynamic program that stresses the fundamental aspects of photography, the highest level of technical proficiency and professional judgment; one that gives a broad understanding of the techniques, materials and equipment used in the profession today. The success of so many DBC and UCF graduates attests to their skill, drive and resourcefulness, as well as the way that their interest in the medium was nurtured, informed and developed. In recent years, the strength of the DBC program has been extended and expanded with a strategic partnership that offers a four-year bachelor’s degree program through the University of Central Florida. Since its inception nearly five years ago, the bachelor’s program has attracted some of Florida’s best and brightest to Daytona Beach to undertake serious photographic studies. More than twenty graduates are showcased here in an exciting and diverse exhibition.
